Welcome to the Great Southern
Emergency Management District portal
The Great Southern spans approximately 96,000km2, with the 28 shires having a combined population of approximately 75,000 people. The region is recognised for its unique biodiversity, with natural assets that include the Porongurup and Stirling Ranges, the Fitzgerald National Park, the Dryandra Woodlands, Wave Rock and a spectacular coastline.
The area contributes significantly to WA's economy, with a gross area product of approximately $6.1 billion per annum. Major industries include mining, viticulture, horticulture, agriculture, fishing, tourism and food processing.
The Great Southern has a diverse climatic zone with typical Mediterranean in the northern half through to a mild south coastal climate. The coastal zone has a large population increase over both the summer and Easter holiday periods, which brings additional risk management challenges to the district.
Natural and man-made hazard events occur throughout the region. The identified priority hazards (as identified by the State Risk Project) include: Animal and Plant Biosecurity, Bushfire, Earthquake, Flood, Marine Oil Pollution and Storm.
